Handfasting cords fit for a Viking ceremony

“Our love is like the ocean, vast and deep. It knows no boundaries.” – Lagertha

Norse and Viking themed handfasting and wedding ceremonies have become incredibly popular in recent years and woven the threads of their striking aesthetic into unique celebrations of love. Many people want to connect back to their Scandinavian heritage and play homage to that. There are also cultural influences like TV show Vikings or the hugely popular Game of Thrones which has taken some inspiration from Norse culture. Whatever the reason, choosing a Viking inspired handfasting ceremony could be a beautiful and unique way to celebrate your love for one another.

Unity

Viking weddings are all about joining families and lives in a ceremony of love, commitment, and strength. You may choose to have a unity ceremony of some kind which is common practice for a Viking wedding. A unity ceremony is a symbolic ritual woven into a wedding ceremony and this could include handfasting, circling or the lighting of a unity candle. We think a handfasting ritual would work wonderfully for your Viking wedding as family and friends can also be part it. Read our previous blog on involving family and friends in your handfasting ceremony, for some helpful advice on this.

Colours and symbolism

Viking weddings were colourful occasions. Brides often wore bright dresses with beautifully embroidered details with red being a popular colour. Brides also often wore a fur coat which was again a symbol of social status. Blue, yellow, and green were also favourable colours used in Viking times.

Why not combine three bold ribbon colours like this below cord in blue, yellow and green perhaps?

Silver and gold were of great importance to Vikings as were coins as this signified wealth. The upper classes demonstrated their wealth by adorning themselves in silk and gold threads from foreign places, like Byzantium. Why not incorporate some of these tones into your bespoke handfasting cord. We can customise your cord to fit the exact vibe you would like or add gold coin charms to replicate what the Vikings would have collected.

Some other Viking wedding traditions you might also want to follow:

●        The wedding date must be set on a Friday (Frigg or Frigga’s day).

●        A celebratory feast is always custom.

●        The bride and groom exchanging swords.

●        Drinks including Mead.

I hope you have found this blog post inspiring. If you would like to work with me on designing your own custom handfasting cord, please don’t hesitate to get in touch :) Whatever you decide to do for you Viking themed ceremony we wish you every happiness!
