Handfasting Cords for a Wedding Ceremony
What is a Handfasting Ceremony?
Every handfasting ceremony is different and special. This ancient wedding ritual has been around for hundreds of years and symbolizes the union of marriage, just like that of a wedding ring. By tying a knot around their hands during the handfasting ceremony, the couple is binding themselves to each other with a strong bond of love represented by the handfasting cord.
Who Conducts the Handfasting Wedding Ceremony?
Handfasting ceremonies are common at Pagan ceremonies but are also used in traditional weddings and non-denominational ceremonies. If you would like a handfasting ritual performed at your wedding ceremony, it is best to talk to your celebrant, marriage officiant, or priest for more guidance. Family members can also be invited to tie the cord during the ceremony.
How are the Knots Tied During the Wedding Ceremony?
There are two-knot designs for our handfasting cords - Cords with a decorative Centre Knot and Infinity Knots. For the Centre Knots, cords are designed with a decorative knot in the centre, for example, the Love Knot, the Triple Love Knot, or the Bloom Design. These knots are tied by placing the centre of the knot over the couple’s hands and then tying it in whichever way you and the person conducting the handfasting ceremony prefer (Usually a simply tie underneath the hands).
For Infinity Knots, the cords are designed with a loose section in the middle. Examples for this type of cord include The infinity knot, The Triple Love Knot Infinity Knot, the Nine Knot Infinity Knot. In fact, all our cord designs can be adapted to accommodate this type of tie. This type of handfasting cord is tied around the couple’s hands in a particular way that when the couple withdraws their hands and pulls on the ends of the cords, they leave the cord in a beautiful infinity knot. Custom Designed Handfasting Cords
At Ceotha, your handfasting cord can be designed from scratch, although it will take a little longer to create than my other designs. To start the process, I would invite you to get in touch with me via my Etsy shop messenger, or via email with your design ideas, colour specifications, and the general ‘vibe’ of your upcoming wedding celebration. Once I have a clear understanding of the handfasting cord design, I will send you a sketch of the design for approval.
Your cords can also be customized in other ways to make it truly special to you and your celebration of love. We can add a variety of decorations, charms, and ribbons. We can also play around with colours and the structure of the cord. If you would like to find out more about my custom designed handfasting cords, get in touch with me here.

“The seller was absolutely amazing when it came to doing a custom color order! She sent me some ideas and texture combos and we ended up going with a combo of cotton and velvet textures in our wedding colors. I love this shop and hope to have an opportunity to buy from them again!!”
How Long Does it Take to Create a Handfasting Cord?
The time it takes to create a handfasting cord depends on a variety of factors, including the type of knot, the materials, and the complexity of the design. For Love Knots, Heart Knots, and Infinity Knots, it usually takes 3-5 days and for the other knots, it can take up to 2 weeks. As previously mentioned, custom-designed handfasting cords can take longer to create depending on the time taken to customize the design.
