A guide to polygamous handfasting ceremonies

Among the myriad rituals that bind hearts together, the ancient tradition of handfasting offers a deeply symbolic and profound way to honour the bonds shared among multiple partners, while also being flexible and open enough to allow you to tailor the practise to your precise needs. Let's explore how to craft a meaningful and inclusive handfasting ceremony within a polygamous relationship.

BEFORE THE CEREMONY

Design the cord together:

This is such a simple and effective way to include your all your partners in the process, each of you together could help to select cord colours or any meaningful charms or flower accents.

I specialise in designing custom cords from scratch, meaning that it is possible to design a cord from inspiration where several people contribute to the final cord. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss the elements of your cord design.

Important things to consider when designing the cord:

For a ceremony with multiple partners, we recommend using a center knot design which is tied underneath the hands. This is because  an infinity style handfasting cord is designed for the knot to be pulled by two people (One pulling on each strand) which would be tricky to adapt for more people.

For a ceremony with multiple partners is you will need a cord which is longer than standard cord to wrap around more than two hands. If you’re opting for a center knot we recommend using a belt or something of similar ‘chunkiness’ to test wrapping around your hands and determine how much length you need (get in touch if that doesn’t make sense).

Personalising your cord

We specialise in creating bespoke handfasting cords. It could be that you all choose colours which mean something to each of you or a special fabric or material.  I can incorporate any personal materials you send me into a cord, and this not only allows you to include loved ones who are present on the day but also those who can’t be with you in person. A classic example would be incorporating pieces of material from the wedding clothes of parents, grandparents, or other special people in your life. Get in touch to discuss the possibilities!

We can also add charms that have added meaning. For example, the photo below shows an infinity symbol on top of a Celtic love heart, coming together into the symbol for polyamorous love.

Clarifying ceremony's purpose

It could be a nice idea to define the purpose and symbolism of the handfasting ceremony within the context of your polygamous relationship. Is it a symbol of unity, commitment, or spiritual connection? Understanding the ceremony's significance will guide your planning process and help ensure that it authentically reflects the values and beliefs shared among all partners.

DURNG THE CEREMONY:

Our top tips for a handfasting involving multiple people

If the ceremony involves more than two people having their hands fasted together, we would recommend having a friend or celebrant help you place the cord on your hands and tie it. If you prefer, you can also do the placing and tying yourself, but it will take a certain degree of coordination and practise to get it right. Either way, as the fasting occur, affirmations of love, respect, and mutual support can be spoken, reinforcing the depth and significance of the bonds shared among all partners.

In conclusion, crafting a polygamous handfasting ceremony is a deeply personal and meaningful endeavor that celebrates the unique bonds shared among multiple partners. By approaching the ceremony with intention, authenticity, and a commitment to inclusivity, you can create a powerful and unforgettable expression of love that honors the beauty of diversity within your polygamous family.
